What is osteoporosis and spine fracture?
As we get older, our bones become thin and our bone strength decreases. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become very weak and more likely to break or fracture. It often develops unnoticed over many years, with no symptoms or discomfort until a bone breaks. Fractures caused by osteoporosis most often occur in the spine (compression fracture). However, not all fractures in the spine are caused by osteoporosis. Other things such as high energy injuries or accidents and tumors may also cause a fracture in the spine.
The most common symptom of a spinal fracture is pain. The pain typically occurs near the break itself and is often worse with motion, particularly when you are changing positions. It is often relieved by rest or lying down. Coughing and sneezing can also make the pain increase.
Is a spine fracture treatable?
Fortunately, most people who suffer a spinal fracture or vertebral compression fracture get better within 3 months without specific treatment to repair the fracture. Treatments include: Rest, pain medications, brace.
If you have severe pain that does not respond to nonsurgical treatment, then surgery may be considered. Kyphoplasty, is a minimally invasive vertebral augmentation procedure that involves injection of cement into the broken vertebrae to decrease pain. In addition to kyphoplasty, other surgical treatment options are also available to address chronic pain from a deformed spine due to multiple spine fractures.
