Neck Pain Q & A
What causes neck pain?
The delicate balance of vertebrae, blood vessels, ligaments, muscles, and other structures in your neck not only make your neck an impressive structure, but also provide numerous opportunities for something to go wrong. A pulled muscle or tweaked cervical disc can throw the entire balance off and cause pain.
How is neck pain diagnosed?
Dr. Remi Ajiboye takes your current, past, and family medical histories into consideration for the diagnostic process. Then, he performs a physical exam to assess your musculature, reflexes, and related function.
After the physical portion of the exam, Dr. Ajiboye may recommend further testing to confirm his suspected diagnosis. He may order X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI to detect structural problems.
What treatments are available for neck pain?
Dr. Ajiboye usually steers you toward more conservative treatments for neck pain. Those treatments may include any of the following:
- Anti-inflammatory pain medications
- Physical therapy
- Traction
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy
- Steroid injections
In rare cases, if you exhaust all other treatment options without relief, Dr. Ajiboye may recommend surgery. He uses the least invasive options whenever possible to decompress pinched nerves, fix herniated discs, and fuse vertebrae.
Neck pain can make the simplest activities, like looking around the room, more difficult.
