Stenosis Q & A

What is spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis (pinched nerve) is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the space around the nerves or spinal cord. In many cases, the condition doesn’t cause any problematic symptoms. Other times, the condition can put pressure on the spinal nerves or spinal cord, leading to pain, weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking.

Stenosis usually falls into one of two categories:

  • Cervical stenosis: affects the cervical spine, or the neck
  • Lumbar stenosis: affects the lower back

What causes spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis usually results as the product of aging and the accumulative wear-and-tear on the spine. Others may develop spinal stenosis because they are born with a narrow canal for the nerves or spinal cord.

How is spinal stenosis treated?

If you have a mild form of spinal stenosis, Dr. Ajiboye helps you identify effective techniques to manage your symptoms. If your spinal stenosis worsens or causes disruptive symptoms, Dr. Ajiboye may discuss more involved treatments, such as:

  • Medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic care
  • Steroid injections

In the rare cases that these treatments don’t help, Dr. Ajiboye uses minimally invasive techniques to remove pressure-causing structures and make space around the nerves or spinal cord.
